For this week’s theme, It’s Alive!, I finished one of my previous term’s p5.js assignments, a Michael Jackson dance game. I wasn’t able to complete the game because of the strike, it felt like a great opportunity this week to complete it finally!
Michael Jackson The Experience Thriller
I started this game out by drawing a sketch of Michael Jackson on my iPad using Procreate, and then I took it to After Effects to animate its movement. I am not a great animator, but I am comfortable with rotoscoping, so I found a Just Dance clip on youtube that I could use as a reference to animate my character.
After Effects is not very great when it comes to character animation since it doesn’t support Inverse Kinematics. There’s a widely used add-on in the After Effects community that solves this issue called DUIK BASSELL. It’s an amazing add-on that is very popular in the animation community. It’s known for its versatility. I’ll drop its website down below. It’s really cool!
I used DUIK to rig my character and then animated it frame by frame in After Effects. It took me a couple of weeks to do that. I used Dall.E. to create the background. I asked it to give me a digital painting-like image with a graveyard setting. I was pretty impressed by the results. I also added some effects to make the video more playful, such as lightning, some ghosts & fog in the background, and grass animating down below as well!
